Genetic study shows we have 98% same DNA with bonobos. They are our closest cousins! Frans de Waal, a primalogist, stated that bonobos can be and feel compassion, empathy, patience, and kindness. Humans can understand bonbobos facial language, which makes us realize how close we must be to bonobos. Bonobos live in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in Africa, north of the Kasai River, and South of the Congo River. There are only 10,000 left in the wild.
Chimpanzees are some of our closest relatives, and are very smart. They live in Tanzania and Uganda, in the continent of Africa, and rarely live past 40 years in the wild. Unlike other great apes, chimpanzees are carnivores, and have been known to be cannibals at times. There are only 150,000 of these creatures left among the forests of Africa.
Gorillas are the largest of the great apes, but won't hurt a human unless threatened. Gorillas are gentle vegetarians and live in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwanda ,Uganda, the Burundi-Rwanda-Uganda border,Nigeria,Equatorial Guinea,Gabon and in Cameroon. The threats to gorillas are humans clearing the forests for farming, logging, and roads, hunting, wars, and diseases like the Ebola Virus. There are many sub-species, the Western/Eastern Lowland, and Mountain Gorillas. Cross rivers and Bwindi gorillas are found, but are rare. Gorillas are beautiful creatures and it is up to us to respect and protect them so they will continue to live among these forests.
Orangutans are known as the "red apes" and live in Borneo and Sumatra - in Asia. Orangutans are herbivores. The males live on their own while females take care of their children. The biggest threat to these red orangutans is logging. The orangutan will try to protect it's habitat, usually losing. Sometimes for a very common product - palm oil, found in your cookies, hair gels, and other sweet treats.
Loggers will invade the orangutan's (and other animals) territory - cutting down the forest and replacing the trees with African Oil Palms - not indigenous to Asia. To get these endangered apes out of the way, the loggers will often bury or burn orangutans alive! Orangutans are the most endangered ape - scientists predict only 7,000 are left. Please join us as we work to save the orangutan and abolish palm oil.
Gibbons spend more time in trees and are smaller, for they are "lesser apes". Some of the countries they are found in include China,Laos,Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Bangladesh,India, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Similar to great apes, gibbons do not have tails. 15 species of gibbons exist and some very close to becoming extinct in the wild.
